I can't believe how society deals with the sick & destitute -- first they try to lock you up in hospices (places to die soon); then they keep making these creeping arrangements for funerals BEHIND MY BACK!

hey leon, so sad you're gone. it was great knowing you. your performances at Shake Well in the early 90s really changed the way i thought about making work. always enjoyed talking to you. miss you.

Leon did both of the above, leaving an exhausted and empty-handed crew behind. This was the ultimate disappearing act.
I always thought he would make a very interesting old man one day, maybe even a wise one. He had an old world/new world dichotomy about him, as if he were from a different time and place, but also always endeavouring to be hip with the times. If he had reached old aga, he might have been something like the funny old Jewish trouble-maker with all the speed boats in his documentary film.
Leon usually had a vision for things that he was doing that was apparent only to him. I couldn't understand an internet cafe in Toronto with lousy or non-existent coffee that would also be a book/junk shop and an art gallery among other things. I realize now it was a meeting place for people and that's the purpose that all of Leon's storefronts served. Seeing all his cartoons on a sign outside his final tiny storefront in the desolate Down Town East Side, I thought how much just that one little sandwich board animated a place that's pretty hard to animate.
And why run for mayor in one's final year of life? Because it made him feel alive, I guess.
